Health officials release mandate requiring Californians to wear masks outside of home

The California Department of Health released on Monday an expanded mandate requiring Californians to wear a face covering when outside their homes, overriding a previous order that was announced on June 18.

The use of face coverings can limit exposure, the mandate says. The order also says more evidence is emerging that wearing masks can also provide protection to the wearer.

“This is simply the fastest increase California has seen since the beginning of this pandemic,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday at a briefing.

People who are exempt include children under 2 years old and those who have a medical condition that prevents them from wearing a face covering.
